Me and My Interest

Hi I’m Gemma

A design graduate from the University of Huddersfield where I studied surface design for fashion and interiors, gaining a first-class honours degree. I love all things print, pattern, textiles and colour. I am always on the lookout for new design inspiration for both fashion and Interiors.

Throughout my career I have developed a wide range of digital and graphic design skills, drawing both using the Adobe Creative Suite programs and traditional methods. I have also developed a wide range of visual presentation, merchandising, and styling skills from my role as a visual assistant within Debenhams where I worked for a number of years as part of the visual team at Meadowhall. I have a keen eye for design, colour and fashion and am eager to get involved in creative projects and learn new skills.

I currently work with the fashion brand Me & Thee as a design and creative content assistant, getting involved with different creative aspects of the brand. This can range from designing prints, product photography, branding and labelling design, fashion illustration drawings, trend/ colour research and creating content for their website and social media for example.

During my University course I also completed a number of Industry placement working for both interior and fashion companies including M&S, Topshop, New Look, Me & Thee, Ege Carpets and Muraspec. Where I also spent a short time Blogging for a trend Forecasting company; Scarlet Opus.

Outside of my working roles I volunteer within Girl Guiding as a Brownie Leader and have been involved with Girl Guiding for over 10 years volunteering at a range of different units. I enjoy traveling with Girl Guiding and taking part in international events. I was involved in a service project to Malawi in 2013 and have visited one of the Girl Guide world centres in Switzerland. This very much inspired my love of travel where I enjoy exploring new places and cultures. I often carry a sketch book around with me to capture my environments, experiences, textures and colours. Please refer to my drawing page to see some examples. I often used this inspiration a starting point within my surface pattern designs.

In terms of my other interests I also enjoy sewing and creating crafts for the home and making clothing. As part of one of my personal design projects I designed some bedding, cushions and lampshades for my own home.
